Landmark win for Hamilton

Rookie Lewis Hamilton won the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday in Montreal, the first victory for a black driver in Formula One.

In a race filled with caution flags, the 22-year-old Englishman won in his sixth F1 start and now has six consecutive top-three finishes.

Nick Heidfeld was 4.3 seconds back in second. Alexander Wurz finished third.

Sebastien Bourdais passed pole-sitter Justin Wilson to start the 56th lap and cruised to his third straight victory, and the Grand Prix of Portland (Ore.) introduced Champ Car’s first standing start without a hitch.

Bourdais, the three-time defending series champion, beat Wilson by 13.537 seconds. Rookie Robert Doornbos finished third in the caution-free race.

Larry Dixon tied Kenny Bernstein with his 39th career Top Fuel title, beating points leader Rod Fuller to win the Torco Race Fuels Route 66 NHRA Nationals in Joliet, Ill.

Also winning titles were Gary Scelzi in Funny Car, Pro Stock champ Jeg Coughlin Jr. and reigning Pro Stock Motorcycle champ Andrew Hines.

It had been 37 races since Dixon last won, a streak that dated to September 2005 in Indianapolis. He won with a run of 4.579 seconds at 322.11 mph.

Scelzi became the fourth racer in history to win double-digit titles in both nitro categories (Top Fuel and Funny Car).
