SHOTS

Hit: Paul Casey of England followed his opening round of seven-over 77 Thursday with a four-under 66 Friday.

It was an incredible effort considering Oakmont on Friday was playing to

an average score of 77. Fellow golfer Paul Goydos said he thought Casey’s round would go down as one of the

best ever played in a major. A bogey on the 18th hole (his ninth) was Casey’s only blemish. Key stat: Casey hit 13 of 14 fairways.

Miss: Adam Scott, the young Australian who is ranked fourth in the world with five PGA Tour victories, couldn’t get a taxi fast enough out of Oakmont. Scott finished at 18-over 158, coupling his opening round of 76 with a 12-over 82 Friday. Scott’s 36-hole scorecard was not pretty: He finished with 22 pars, 11 bogeys, two double bogeys and a triple bogey. He had no birdies. He hit only 14 of 28 fairways.
