RESULTS
* at Boston 2, Texas 1: Manny Delcarmen struck out Sammy Sosa with a 96-mph, full-count fastball with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to preserve the win for Tim Wakefield. Wakefield (8-8) gave up one run and seven hits. Delcarmen relieved him with two on and two out, then walked the bases full before retiring Sosa to end the threat.
* Minnesota 11, at Detroit 1: The anticipated pitching duel between Johan Santana and Justin Verlander never really materialized. Verlander gave up two runs in the first inning and Joe Mauer broke the game open with a grand slam in the fifth. Verlander (9-3) walked five in five innings. Santana (9-4) yielded five hits and one run.
* at New York 2, Oakland 1: Mike Mussina pitched seven crisp innings to help the Yankees win for the first time in a week. Manager Joe Torre picked up win No. 2,010 to move one ahead of Leo Durocher for ninth on the career list.
* at Kansas City 8, Chicago 1: Shane Costa and Esteban German drove in two runs apiece, leading the Royals to their first five-game winning streak in two years. Zack Greinke held the White Sox to one hit over the last 2 2/3 innings to earn the first save of his three-year major league career. The Royals had not won five in a row since June 11-16, 2005.
* at Seattle 5, Toronto 3: Jarrod Washburn (7-6) wasn’t overpowering in his six innings. He failed to strike out a batter and gave up nine hits -- all singles. The Mariners improved to 8-2 on their season-high 12-game homestand.
* at Cleveland 2, Tampa Bay 1: Ben Francisco led off the bottom of the ninth with his first major league home run.
* Angels 9, at Baltimore 7: Howie Kendrick hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the ninth inning.
