At this rumble, all the combat is hand-to-hand

THE playfully irreverent hipster crowd that offbeat event throwers Party Scammers usually attract is in for some eye-rolling on Saturday night.

The occasion is the 5th Annual Rock Paper Scissors Rumble, which not only turns the children’s game into theatrical, beer-soaked revelry but this year also takes a turn for the surreal: It will feature a non-human competitor.

Yes, the stoic two-time defending champion known as Caine (competitors come ready with costumes, alter egos and friends who serve as cheering sections) this year will have to contend with Roshambobot -- a robot equipped with limbs and software designed to randomly throw down either rock, paper or scissors.

It’s the brainchild of a group of volunteer engineers and programmers assembled by Mark Allen at the Machine Project Art Space in Echo Park. And like everybody else who figures to party with Party Scammers, Roshambobot has a MySpace page: www.myspace.com/168549367.

The event, at the new Ex-Plx downstairs from the Eastside nightclub the Echo, is hosted by self-professed “alternative comedian” Ryan Flynn.

The night features DJs, dancing, a pre-competition set by local rapper the Gray Kid and a late set by the consciously cheesy New York City retro-rock act Cheeseburger.
