Suspicious pipe found harmless

A suspicious piece of capped PVC pipe discovered Tuesday near the entrance to a Coast Guard station has been found to be roadside debris likely discarded from a passing vehicle, authorities said.
A mile-long stretch of Harbor Drive that had been closed while the pipe was investigated was reopened about 4:30 p.m., said Maurice Luque, a spokesman for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
“Somebody had made this for whatever reason, but we don’t think it was meant to look like a pipe bomb,” he said.
A jogger found the pipe propped against a sign about 1 p.m. and alerted authorities. The FBI, U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the San Diego police, Harbor police and San Diego fire departments responded.
All nonessential personnel from the Coast Guard building were evacuated while the cylinder was X-rayed.
