Jurors have partial decision in Graham trial

Federal jurors deliberating the fate of track coach Trevor Graham reached a verdict Wednesday in San Francisco on one of three counts that he lied to investigators probing steroid use in sports, but told the judge they are “hopelessly deadlocked” on the other two.

U.S. District Judge Susan Illston read the panel instructions for a deadlocked jury and sent it back for further deliberations.

Less than an hour later, the 12-person jury wrapped up its first full day of deliberations without coming to a conclusion on the other counts.

The jury was set to resume deliberations today.

Graham is charged with three counts of lying to two IRS agents about his relationship with Angel “Memo” Heredia, a discus thrower who bought performance-enhancing drugs in Mexico and sold them to many star track athletes.

The jurors told Illston they reached a unanimous verdict on the charge relating to phone calls to Heredia but were deadlocked on the other two.

Former Denver Broncos punter Todd Sauerbrun pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace in a confrontation with a Denver taxi driver last December and was sentenced to perform 24 hours of community service.

Former tennis star Roscoe Tanner has been arraigned on felony theft charges in Knoxville, Tenn.

Tanner is accused of writing a $72,263.43 check to a Knoxville Toyota dealership for two Toyota Highlanders and refusing to return the vehicles when the check bounced.

A court hearing is set for July 8.

UCLA, USC tied for lead after first round

UCLA’s Kevin Chappell shot a three-under-par 69 and the Bruins were tied with USC after the first round of the NCAA men’s Division I golf championship at West Lafayette, Ind.

USC’s Tim Sluiter and Kent State’s David Markle were one stroke behind Chappell.

Lorena Ochoa withdrew from the Ginn Tribute, putting the top-ranked player’s duel with tournament host Annika Sorenstam on hold.

Ochoa left for Mexico on Tuesday, saying in a statement that her uncle was ill.

Washington State releases top recruit

Top quarterback recruit Calvin Schmidtke will be released from his agreement to play at Washington State next season, Coach Paul Wulff said.

Schmidtke was arrested in Pierce County recently for investigation in a variety of traffic and controlled substance violations.

North Carolina A&T; State senior Chad Wiley collapsed Tuesday and died from complications of heat illness.

McBride says he will return to U.S. to play

Brian McBride said he is leaving Fulham of England’s Premier League to return to the United States. If McBride signs with Major League Soccer, Toronto would have the first chance to sign him.

Microsoft Corp. will become the naming sponsor for the Seattle Sounders FC when the expansion MLS team begins play in the 2009 season.

NASCAR penalizes two crew chiefs

NASCAR handed down its most severe penalties yet concerning alterations to its new car when the crew chiefs and car chiefs for Scott Riggs and Johnny Sauter were suspended six races each for tampering with the rear wings on their Chevrolets last weekend at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

Additionally, crew chiefs Bootie Barker and Dave Skog were fined $100,000 each. Derick Jennings and Thomas Harris, the car chiefs, were not fined but must sit out until the July 12 race in Chicago, and are on probation through the end of the year.

East Los Angeles boxer Sergio Mora (20-0-1, 5 knockouts) challenges World Boxing Council light-middleweight champion Vernon Forrest (40-2, 29 KO) of Atlanta on June 7 at Uncasville, Conn.
