Bills’ Peters to end holdout

Rather than lose a game paycheck of more than $191,000, Buffalo Bills Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters made plans Friday to end his holdout and report to the team by today.

Though Peters and his representatives were unavailable for comment, Russ Brandon, the Bills chief operating officer, released a statement saying, “It is our understanding that Jason has filed a reinstatement letter with the National Football League and that he is reporting to [team headquarters] tomorrow morning.”

The NFL confirmed that Peters has sent it a letter requesting reinstatement, which is a requirement in this case because the player is on the Bills’ reserve-did-not-report list.

Peters, who had off-season surgery to repair a sports hernia, must still pass a team physical, making it very unlikely that he will play Sunday, when the Bills open their season hosting Seattle.

Peters has three years left on his contract but began his holdout last spring in an attempt to force the Bills into restructuring his deal.

New York Giants defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka said that Washington Redskins tackle Chris Samuels made a dirty play when he fell on the back of his ankle after being beaten on a pass rush on the final play of the NFL season opener.

Kiwanuka hurt his left ankle on the play. X-rays were negative, but the ankle was still sore Friday, and so was Kiwanuka.

“Honestly, I thought it was a dirty play,” Kiwanuka said. “There’s no question about it. He was definitely beat and instead of recovering or giving up, I don’t know how many options you had, but I just don’t think there is any place for that in the NFL.”

Samuels said he wasn’t trying to hurt anyone.

“On that particular play I was just trying to protect my quarterback,” Samuels said through a Redskins spokesman.

“It was never my intention to go out there and injure another player.”

Seahawks wide receiver Deion Branch was ruled out of Seattle’s opener at Buffalo by Coach Mike Holmgren. Branch was trying to get back in time for the opener only seven months after having major reconstructive surgery on his left knee. . . . Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Jerry Porter was ruled out of Sunday’s opener at Tennessee because of a hamstring injury. Porter, who signed a lucrative contract during the off-season to be the team’s No. 1 receiver, had surgery to repair a torn hamstring a week before training camp. He sat out all of camp and the exhibition season but returned to practice Monday and had hoped to be back for the opener. . . . Miami Dolphins Coach Tony Sparano said that Ricky Williams will start at running back Sunday against the New York Jets but that Ronnie Brown will play early and play a lot.
