Stanford wins by one shot

Angela Stanford won the Bell Micro LPGA Classic on Sunday for her second LPGA Tour title, holing a 3 1/2 -foot par putt on the final hole for a one-over 73 and a one-stroke victory over China’s Shanshan Feng at Mobile, Ala.

“It’s been so long,” said Stanford, whose first title came in the 2003 ShopRite LPGA Classic.

The 30-year-old Texan, four strokes ahead entering the day after consecutive 67s in the second and third rounds, had an 11-under 277 total on the Crossings course at Magnolia Grove. She earned $210,000.

“I’m more relieved than excited,” Stanford said of her second title. “I honestly believe the second time is harder, because the first time you don’t really know what’s happening and then you just try to do it again. I’ve been trying, and probably too hard.”

The 19-year-old Feng, who finished with a 68, had her chances to earn the first title of her career, but she lipped out on a putt for an eagle at the 16th -- a hole she had eagled twice earlier in the tournament -- and missed a birdie putt on the final hole.

R.W. Eaks successfully defended his Greater Hickory Classic title at Conover, N.C., closing with a one-under 71 in windy conditions for a four-stroke victory over Tom Jenkins and Tom Kite.

Eaks had a 16-under 200 total on the Rock Barn Golf and Spa course and earned $255,000 for his second victory of the year.

“Nobody was really making a run,” Eaks said. “I felt that if I just stayed out of trouble and played a nice, safe game today, things might work out.”
