Beasley is fined $50,000 by NBA

Miami Heat rookie Michael Beasley was fined $50,000 by the NBA on Thursday after acknowledging that he was involved in an incident involving teammate Mario Chalmers and Memphis’ Darrell Arthur at the Rookie Transition Program this month.

The NBA said Beasley, the No. 2 overall pick, originally failed to cooperate with the league investigation of the matter. The Heat said Beasley eventually chose to reveal that he was part of the incident.

Chalmers and Arthur were fined $20,000 apiece last week after being banished from the rookie symposium. They were found in a room at a resort near New York where the event was taking place with two women -- which violated NBA policy for the event. Security at the resort said the scent of marijuana was detected, but no drugs or drug paraphernalia were found.

Beasley’s involvement in the incident was not clear.

Minnesota Timberwolves forward Al Jefferson has a sprained right knee and will be sidelined for two to three weeks.

Shameka Christon scored 19 points and the New York Liberty beat the Connecticut Sun, 72-63, in the opener of their WNBA Eastern Conference first-round playoff series in New York.

Becky Hammon scored 30 and the San Antonio Silver Stars beat the host Sacramento Monarchs, 85-78, in a Western Conference opener.

Wie in fourth at LPGA qualifier

Michelle Wie salvaged a ragged round with a birdie-birdie finish to remain among the leaders after the third round of an LPGA Tour sectional qualifying tournament at Rancho Mirage.

Wie’s closing birdies gave her a two-over-par 74 on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club. That left Wie at seven-under 209 entering today’s final round. She was fourth and still comfortably inside the top 30 players and ties who will advance to the final qualifying tournament in Florida in December.

Marc Turnesa, a 30-year-old PGA Tour rookie, shot a seven-under-par 65 for a one-shot lead over Brian Gay at the Viking Classic in Madison, Miss.

Boxer awakens from coma

Welterweight boxer Oscar Diaz has awakened from a coma, two months after he was seriously injured during a bout in his native San Antonio. The 25-year-old Diaz was awake and breathing on his own. He has been upgraded from critical to stable condition, and doctors at University Hospital are cautiously optimistic about his recovery.

Diaz was unable to leave his corner for the 11th round of his fight with Delvin Rodriguez, eventually collapsing in the ring. The severe brain injuries put him in a coma after emergency surgery to relieve swelling in his brain, but doctors have expected him to survive the injuries since shortly after they occurred.

Restricted free-agent forward Patrick O’Sullivan remains unsigned and is unlikely to participate when the Kings take to the ice in El Segundo today for their first training-camp practices. O’Sullivan, 23, showed enormous improvement last season in scoring 22 goals and 53 points and playing all 82 games.

“We do not expect him to be in camp [today],” General Manager Dean Lombardi said. “We have a pretty big gap, but we will continue to try and get a deal with term,” meaning more than one year.
