at Boston 10-7, Minnesota 1-3: Tim Wakefield threw a seven-inning complete game in the rain-shortened opener and the Red Sox picked up their seventh consecutive victory in the nightcap when Brad Penny went a solid six innings. Wakefield, 42, is the oldest pitcher to throw back-to-back complete games since fellow knuckleballer Charlie Hough, who was 44 when he did it in 1992 for the Chicago White Sox.

Kansas City 2, at Cleveland 0: Brian Bannister and two relievers outpitched reigning Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee (1-3), who matched his loss total of a year ago. Bannister (1-0) improved to 4-1 with a 1.62 ERA in six starts against Cleveland.

Chicago 8, at Baltimore 2: Jim Thome hit his 545th homer to back a John Danks (2-0), who gave up one run, four hits and no walks in seven innings.

at Toronto 8, Texas 7: Kevin Millar singled home the winning run in the 11th inning against former Angels reliever Darren O’Day, who was claimed on waivers from the New York Mets earlier in the day.

Tampa Bay 9, at Seattle 3: The Rays’ Jeff Niemann took a perfect game into the fifth inning, and Tampa Bay scored in the first six innings.

Detroit 12, at Angels 10: Scot Shields couldn’t get anyone out again.
