Greed is still good for Oscar winners

The American Cinematheque’s Egyptian Theatre is getting into the spirit of award season with a retrospective of Oscar-winning favorites. Two best picture winners -- 1954’s “On the Waterfront” and 1969’s “Midnight Cowboy” -- will screen tonight.

Oscar-winning performances are on display in Friday’s double bill of 1976’s “Network,” for which Peter Finch won a posthumous lead actor and Faye Dunaway and Beatrice Straight earned both actress awards, and 1987’s “Wall Street,” with lead actor Michael Douglas oozing malevolence as a slick corporate raider.

The Cinematheque’s Aero Theatre will spend an evening with animator Emily Hubley on Friday. The program consists of several of her animated shorts as well as work from award-winning parents Faith and John Hubley and the L.A. premiere of her first feature, “The Toe Tactic.” Emily Hubley will discuss the works.

A 70-millimeter print of Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 sci-fi masterwork “2001: A Space Odyssey” is set to screen Saturday at the Aero. The disappointing 1984 sequel, “2010,” follows on Wednesday along with Michael Radford’s version of George Orwell’s “1984,” which was released in -- you guessed it -- 1984.
