Greed is still good for Oscar winners

The American Cinematheque’s Egyptian Theatre is getting into the spirit of award season with a retrospective of Oscar-winning favorites. Two best picture winners -- 1954’s “On the Waterfront” and 1969’s “Midnight Cowboy” -- will screen tonight.

Oscar-winning performances are on display in Friday’s double bill of 1976’s “Network,” for which Peter Finch won a posthumous lead actor and Faye Dunaway and Beatrice Straight earned both actress awards, and 1987’s “Wall Street,” with lead actor Michael Douglas oozing malevolence as a slick corporate raider.

The Cinematheque’s Aero Theatre will spend an evening with animator Emily Hubley on Friday. The program consists of several of her animated shorts as well as work from award-winning parents Faith and John Hubley and the L.A. premiere of her first feature, “The Toe Tactic.” Emily Hubley will discuss the works.

A 70-millimeter print of Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 sci-fi masterwork “2001: A Space Odyssey” is set to screen Saturday at the Aero. The disappointing 1984 sequel, “2010,” follows on Wednesday along with Michael Radford’s version of George Orwell’s “1984,” which was released in -- you guessed it -- 1984. Mae West tribute

The legendary movie siren Mae West, who never met an innuendo she didn’t use, will be feted Monday evening by the UCLA Film & Television Archive and the School of Theater, Film and Television at the James Bridges Theater on the Westwood campus.

Charlotte Chandler, author of the new autobiography “She Always Knew How: Mae West, a Personal Biography”; film critic Kevin Thomas, who was a friend of West’s; and her personal secretary, Tim Malachosky, will reminiscence about the comedic actress and show film clips. cinema.ucla.edu

‘Haunted’ artist

Chicago-based filmmaker and artist Deborah Stratman will appear at Film at REDCAT’s program Monday, “Deborah Stratman: America’s Haunted Spirits,” featuring her latest work, “O’er the Land,” as well as “The Paranormal Trilogy.” redcat.org
