CALIFORNIA BRIEFING / CARLSBAD
A 27-year-old man is in jail in connection with a hit-and-run crash on Interstate 5 in San Diego County that killed a pregnant 24-year-old woman from Tijuana.
John F. Sudac of Carlsbad voluntarily surrendered Sunday night, officials said Monday. He is the registered owner of a vehicle that collided near Solana Beach on Sunday morning with a car in which Yina Gonzalez, her husband, 5-year-old daughter and two other relatives were riding. Gonzalez was six months’ pregnant; her fetus was also killed, officials said.
Sudac allegedly stopped at the scene of the crash and then left. He faces possible charges of felony hit-and-run, gross vehicular manslaughter, marijuana possession and drunk driving, the CHP said.
Officials also are seeking a person who stopped at the crash, grabbed Gonzalez’s purse and drove off.
