WORLD BRIEFING / SPAIN
Times Wire Reports
A bomb on the resort island of Majorca killed two police officers, the second attack blamed on Basque separatist group ETA in as many days.
Police carried out a controlled explosion on a second bomb. Authorities temporarily blocked all outgoing flights and ships from Majorca.
Less than 36 hours earlier, a car bomb destroyed a police barracks in the northern Spanish city of Burgos, injuring about 60 people.
The 50th anniversary of ETA’s founding is today and the group may be trying to counter government claims that it has been weakened.
