California dodged a bullet to its budget when the House spurned President Obama’s call to eliminate federal payments to states for incarcerating illegal immigrants convicted of crimes. Instead, representatives voted to provide $400 million nationwide next year, the same as this year.
The Senate, which still must act, is also expected to preserve the payments. California receives about 40% of the money.
