Re “Car kills cyclist during event,” June 29
The headline should have said “drunken driver.” The car was not “under the influence.”
How many of these daily deaths, maimings and properties damaged and destroyed from drunken drivers are needed before the autos involved are immediately confiscated and held until trial?
If the driver is found guilty of drunk driving, permanent confiscation of the car would significantly reduce drunk driving.

That a bicyclist and his son are run down at 1:30 a.m. on Pacific Coast Highway is clearly tragic.
Why a well-respected bicycle club would operate an ultra-endurance event long into Saturday night and Sunday morning along a well-traveled road is another matter.
As a cyclist living in a beach town, one hears the Saturday night car crashes, sees the mowed-down traffic signs and cleans up the flotsam and jetsam of the revelers. It is no place for a bicycle in the wee hours as the bars are closing.
As cycling events become more and more popular, it just makes sense for events to have a safe finish time before the dark of night, when careless drivers aim homeward.
