Anxiety disorder puts Khalil Greene on DL again

Even when Khalil Greene homered in his first three games after going on the 15-day disabled list because of social anxiety disorder, St. Louis Cardinals Manager Tony La Russa held off celebrating.

“When he had success in Kansas City, that wasn’t really the test,” La Russa said. “The test is when you struggle and how you handle it.”

Greene scuffled the next five games, going one for 17 with five strikeouts, and the anxiety resurfaced. The Cardinals put him on the disabled list for a second time Monday.

“We just felt it was a move we had to make to get him away from it again,” La Russa said.

General Manager John Mozeliak said Greene would not be with the team for perhaps two weeks.

Greene, acquired in the off-season from the San Diego Padres, is batting .200 with five home runs and 19 runs batted in.

Oakland Athletics rookie left-hander Josh Outman will have surgery on his pitching elbow today.

The Athletics didn’t immediately announce the severity of the surgery or a timetable for Outman’s return.

Outman visited with Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., on Monday. Outman was transferred to the 60-day disabled list a day earlier, signaling the club expects a long recovery.

Milwaukee Brewers prospect Jeremy Jeffress, a 21-year-old right-hander, was suspended for 100 games after his third violation of baseball’s minor league program for a drug of abuse. . . . The Houston Astros put right-handed pitcher Brandon Backe on waivers. The 31-year-old, who has no record with a 10.38 earned-run average in 13 innings for the Astros, rejected an assignment to triple-A Round Rock.

Korver decides to stick with Jazz

Kyle Korver has decided he will stay with the Utah Jazz at least one more season.

Korver had the option to stay with the Jazz for the final year of his contract or opt out and become a free agent this summer.

The Jazz said that Korver’s agent told the team that Korver would stay in Utah for the final year of the contract. The reserve shooting guard is guaranteed $5.2 million next season.

The Milwaukee Bucks have made qualifying offers to restricted free-agent guard Ramon Sessions and forward Ersan Ilyasova but will not make an offer to forward Charlie Villanueva -- allowing one of their top scorers from last season to become an unrestricted free agent. . . . The Indiana Pacers will not exercise their team option on guard Marquis Daniels. Daniels averaged a career-high 13.6 points per game last season, but Brandon Rush is the favorite to start at shooting guard next season.

High court to hear NFL case

The Supreme Court agreed to decide whether the NFL and its 32 teams can enter an exclusive licensing deal with a maker of team jerseys and other gear without violating federal antitrust law.

The court said it would hear an appeal from American Needle Inc., of Buffalo Grove, Ill., that challenges an agreement the NFL struck with Reebok International Ltd. American Needle had been one of many firms that manufactured NFL headgear until the league granted an exclusive contract to Reebok in 2001.

Eagles sign draft choice McCoy

The Philadelphia Eagles agreed to terms on a four-year deal with second-round draft choice LeSean McCoy.

The running back from Pittsburgh, taken by Philadelphia with the 53rd overall selection, is the first second-round pick to sign, according to agent Drew Rosenhaus.

Arkansas’ Battle kicked off team

Arkansas linebacker Khiry Battle has been dismissed from the team after a weekend arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Coach Bobby Petrino announced Battle’s dismissal Monday, saying only that he’d violated team rules.

Battle played in 10 games last season as a freshman and made five tackles.

North Carolina State linebacker Nate Irving is recovering from surgery after being hurt in a car crash.

A WakeMed Trauma Center spokeswoman in Raleigh, N.C., said Irving was in good condition after surgery Sunday night. Irving was hospitalized because of a broken leg and a collapsed lung after running his vehicle off the road Sunday. He has been charged with careless and reckless driving.
