Police: Stallworth hits, kills pedestrian

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth hit and killed a pedestrian with his Bentley on Saturday morning on a busy causeway linking Miami and Miami Beach, police said.

Stallworth was headed toward the beach when he hit a 49-year-old man about 7 a.m., said a Miami Beach police spokesman. The unidentified pedestrian was taken to a nearby trauma center, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later. He was near a crosswalk, but it’s not clear if he was crossing legally.

Stallworth, 28, was cooperating and no charges have been filed, the spokesman said. Officers drew blood to test for drugs or alcohol, which is routine, but police said it was too early to tell if Stallworth was impaired or violating traffic laws.

Stallworth signed a seven-year, $35-million contract with the Browns as a free agent before last season but hardly played because he was hurt. He was due a $4.75-million signing bonus Friday.

Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler put his four-bedroom, seven-bath home in suburban Castle Pines, Colo., up for sale for $2 million. The Pro Bowl quarterback and new Coach Josh McDaniels are in a dispute over attempts to trade him two weeks ago. Cutler still has a condominium in downtown Denver.

The Detroit Lions acquired Pro Bowl linebacker Julian Peterson from the Seattle Seahawks for defensive tackle Cory Redding and a fifth-round pick in next month’s NFL draft. Both players must pass physicals to complete the trade.

The Arena Football League and its players reached a collective bargaining agreement that could clear the way for play to resume in 2010.

Amir Khan pounded Marco Antonio Barrera with speedy punches in the fifth round of a lightweight bout at Manchester, England, and won on a technical decision.

Arthur Abraham retained his IBF middleweight title with an easy unanimous decision over Lajuan Simon at Kiel, Germany.

Liverpool upsets United, 4-1

Liverpool stunned Manchester United, 4-1, to open up the Premier League title race and Andrei Arshavin’s first goal for Arsenal helped the Gunners up to fourth place in a 4-0 victory over Blackburn.

Although Cristiano Ronaldo put United ahead from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute, the defenders handed Liverpool the three points with some awful errors as the visitors cut the defending champion’s lead to four points.

The Galaxy and Chicago Fire played to a 1-1 draw in an exhibition game at Tempe, Ariz.

Bolt runs 100 in 9.93 seconds

Olympic star Usain Bolt ran his first 100-meter race of the year, finishing in 9.93 seconds and sharing first place at the GC Foster College Classic at Spanish Town, Jamaica.

The Jamaican slowed before the finish, smiling and reaching out to congratulate training partner Daniel Bailey in the next lane as they crossed the line together.

Martin Brodeur tied Patrick Roy’s NHL career record of 551 wins when the New Jersey goalie led the Devils to a 3-1 win over the Canadiens in Montreal.

Florida sophomore defensive tackle Torrey Davis, who made two goal-line tackles in the national-championship victory over Oklahoma, has left the team. No reason was announced.

Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway clinched his second overall World Cup title by a record-low two-point margin at Are, Sweden, winning when Benjamin Raich of Austria straddled a gate in the opening run of the final slalom of the season. Also at Are, Sweden, Tanja Poutiainen of Finland clinched the World Cup giant slalom title by finishing second to Tina Maze of Slovenia in the final GS race. Overall champion Lindsey Vonn fell and missed a gate at the top of the course and didn’t qualify for the second run.

Swimming’s governing body adopted new rules for the high-tech suits that helped produce more than 100 world records since their introduction just over a year ago.

The guidelines will be in place for the world championships in Rome in July. FINA stipulated that swimsuits should not cover the neck and will not extend past the shoulders and ankles.
