KNBC-TV Channel 4 on Tuesday bid a formal farewell to anchor Paul Moyer, who retired last month. Moyer returned the gesture with a golf swing.
In a segment lasting more than 10 minutes during the 5 p.m. newscast, the news team paid tribute to Moyer, who had been with the station for more than 24 years. His unexpected departure followed speculation that his salary, estimated at more than $3 million a year, was too high for KNBC to sustain.
The farewell included vintage clips of Moyer covering local news stories. His longtime co-anchor, Colleen Williams, sports anchor Fred Roggin and weatherman Fritz Coleman praised the newsman.
After several minutes, the tribute switched to a live remote of Moyer at a Pacific Palisades golf course. He choked up briefly while thanking colleagues and viewers, and reiterated his immediate plans to spend more time with his family.
