Capistrano Valley beats Orange Lutheran
TUESDAY’S RESULT
Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley 4, Orange Lutheran 0
Top contributors: Senior left-hander Tyler Matzek pitched six scoreless innings, striking out seven and walking three in the Southern Section Division I second-round game at Hart Park in Orange. Junior right-hander Andrew Thurman, who has committed to UC Irvine, gave up two runs in 6 1/3 innings.
The scoop: With two out in the top of the seventh inning, Nolan Clark drew a bases-loaded walk against reliever Bobby Wheatley to end a scoreless tie and Matzek followed with a two-run single past diving third baseman Willie Shaw. Kevin Chambers capped the scoring with a run-scoring single to center field.
Why it matters: Third-seeded Capistrano Valley will play host to Huntington Beach Marina in a quarterfinal playoff game Friday.
Records: Capistrano Valley 22-6; Lutheran 18-11.
