Wie wins first LPGA tournament

Michelle Wie won her first LPGA Tour title, fulfilling the promise of a decade with a three-under-par 69 Sunday for a two-stroke victory over Paula Creamer in the Lorena Ochoa Invitational at Guadalajara.

Wie finished off the victory in style, hitting a greenside bunker shot to six inches on the 18th hole and then tapping in for a birdie.

The 20-year-old Wie raised both arms in the air -- her putter in her right hand -- and then put her hand over her mouth. After pulling the ball out of the hole, she turned to the gallery, looked to the sky and let out a large sigh of relief.

Morgan Pressel (67), Jiyai Shin (71) and Cristie Kerr (72) were three back. Wie finished at 13-under 275 after starting the day at the Guadalajara Country Club tied for the lead with Kerr at 10 under.

Stephen Ames won his second title in three years at the Children’s Miracle Network Classic, edging George McNeill and Justin Leonard in a playoff at Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Ames was calm and cool on greens that were too slick for most of the field on a sun-baked day at Disney World. He finished with an eight-under 64 for the clubhouse lead, watching as McNeill (67) and Leonard (67) failed to pass him.

Djokovic defeats Monfils in Paris final

Third-seeded Novak Djokovic scrambled to a 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (3) victory over local favorite Gael Monfils to win the Paris Masters for the first time.

Lesnar faces ‘serious’ illness, report says

Brock Lesnar, the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s heavyweight champion, has a “serious” illness and expects to be out of action for an extended period, according to a Yahoo Sports report.

Contacted Sunday by The Times, UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta would say only that the organization is granting Lesnar’s request for privacy.

The Yahoo story, quoting UFC President Dana White from a Saturday event in Manchester, England, reported Lesnar recently collapsed in Canada and returned home to learn he had a health problem beyond his previous diagnosis of mononucleosis.

Lesnar had to pull out of his scheduled fight Saturday at UFC 106 in Las Vegas, and the UFC’s Jan. 2 card versus Shane Carwin.

“It’s bad,” White told Yahoo’s Dave Meltzer. “It’s real bad. I am worried about it. I can’t really talk about it right now, but [Lesnar] is in rough shape.”

Ohno takes first in 1,000 meters

Apolo Anton Ohno won the 1,000 meters at the short-track speedskating World Cup at Marquette, Mich., beating South Korea’s Lee Jung-su in the final.

Canada’s Francois Hamelin finished third.

Hollywood Park to honor Zenyatta

Undefeated Zenyatta is getting a day at Hollywood Park to celebrate the mare who ended her career with a 14-0 record and a victory over the boys in the $5-million Breeders’ Cup Classic.

She will be saluted at her home track on Nov. 29. She is set to start her breeding career next year in Kentucky.

Zenyatta will parade between races on the program and fans in attendance will receive a DVD titled “Zenyatta, a Living Legend,” featuring all 14 of her races. A poster reading “Girl Power, Go Zenyatta” will be distributed.

Owners Jerry and Ann Moss will be on hand, along with trainer John Shirreffs and Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith.

FIFA handed Argentina Coach Diego Maradona a two-month ban from all soccer activities for his expletive-filled rants after his team qualified for the 2010 World Cup.

Maradona will miss Argentina’s exhibition against the Czech Republic scheduled for Dec. 16, but he avoided sanctions that would have kept him from coaching at next year’s World Cup in South Africa. He also was fined $24,250.
