Suns acquire Hedo Turkoglu, Josh Childress

The Phoenix Suns have acquired forward Hedo Turkoglu in a trade that sends guard Leandro Barbosa and forward Dwayne Jones to Toronto.

The deal gives the Suns a third forward in their attempt to replace free agent Amare Stoudemire. Phoenix signed swingman Josh Childress in a sign-and-trade deal with Atlanta earlier Wednesday and picked up Hakim Warrick in a similar swap with Chicago.

Turkoglu spent one disappointing season with the Raptors, averaging 11.3 points after being named the NBA’s most improved player with Orlando the year before as the Magic reached the NBA Finals.

Barbosa, the NBA’s 2006-07 sixth man of the year, played seven seasons in Phoenix, averaging 12.6 points as a key sub. Jones spent most of last season in the NBA Developmental League.

Free-agent power forward Al Harrington says he’s headed to the Denver Nuggets, who are in dire need of frontcourt help with Kenyon Martin, Chris Andersen and Nene coming off leg injuries.

The former New York Knicks backup tweeted: “I’m taking my Talents to the MILE HIGH.”

ESPN first reported Harrington had chosen Denver over Dallas.

Harrington, a 6-foot-9 forward who averaged 17.7 points and 5.6 rebounds last season, would make about $5.8 million a year with the mid-level exception.

Billy King is the New Jersey Nets’ new general manager.

King was hired to replace Rod Thorn as the team’s top executive, new owner Mikhail Prokhorov announced.

Thorn is stepping aside as president and general manager on Friday. He has said he simply wants a change of scenery after a decade of running the team.

Maradona offered an extension

The Argentine Football Assn. says it will offer Maradona a new four-year contract that would keep him in charge of the national team through the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Former Arsenal and Barcelona soccer player Thierry Henry signed a multiyear contract with the New York Red Bulls.

Henry, 32, of France, was released by Barcelona last month after scoring four goals last season.

The family of the late John Wooden has agreed to continue the college basketball doubleheader named for him and played in Anaheim for the last 16 years. The event will be Dec. 18 at the Honda Center and feature UCLA against BYU and St. Mary’s against Long Beach State.

Jim Wooden and Nancy Muehlhausen, the coach’s son and daughter, said in a statement that they’re proud the event will continue to celebrate their father’s life and legacy.

After mulling several designs, the Izod IndyCar Series chose one proposed by the series’ current chassis designer Dallara for its new race cars set to debut in 2012. But the series said other manufacturers would be invited to “dress” Dallara’s new chassis with different body work such as front and rear wings, side pods and so forth, subject to IndyCar’s safety standards. The series said the new chassis would bolster driver safety but be lighter and cost about 40% less than the current chassis. Separately, Newman-Haas Racing said driver Graham Rahal, 21, would return to the team for six of the eight remaining IndyCar races this season, starting Sunday in Toronto.
