Andre Ethier remains third in All-Star balloting

Dodgers right fielder Andre Ethier remained third among National League outfielders in voting for the All-Star game at Angel Stadium on July 13, Major League Baseball said Tuesday.

Ryan Braun of the Milwaukee Brewers led the latest tally with 1,816,052 votes, followed by Jason Heyward of the Atlanta Braves with 1,786,786 votes.

Ethier was third with 1,723,266 in his bid to make his first All-Star game, trailing Braun by 92,786 votes and Heyward by 63,520. Ethier also was ahead of fourth-place Jayson Werth of the Philadelphia Phillies by 377,468 votes.

Leading in all three Triple Crown categories earlier this year before he injured a finger, Ethier is batting .320 with 12 home runs and 44 runs batted in.

While in-stadium voting for the All-Star teams ends Wednesday, fans can continue to vote online at https://www.dodgers.com until 9 p.m. PDT on July 1, the Dodgers said.

Another Haeger start

Knuckleballer Charlie Haeger was tapped to start Thursday’s game against the Angels after pitching six scoreless innings for triple-A Albuquerque, Manager Joe Torre said.

Haeger, who started the season as the Dodgers’ fifth starter, will be coming off the 15-day disabled list, where the Dodgers had moved him because of what they said was a foot problem. The right-hander had an 8.53 earned-run average when the Dodgers placed him on the DL.

Chad Billingsley, meanwhile, should rejoin the Dodgers on Sunday after a stint on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained right groin, Torre said.

“If everything continues to go well we’re looking for Monday in San Francisco” for Billingsley’s next start, Torre said. Billingsley said he threw a 45-pitch bullpen session before Tuesday’s game and felt no ill effects from the injury.

Key for Ely?

It’s only June, but John Ely’s start Wednesday against the Angels could help determine whether the Dodgers’ rookie pitcher merely went through a recent slump or faces a more serious problem.

After six impressive starts, Ely has struggled in his last three starts, giving up 15 runs in 14 2/3 innings, and his earned-run averaged has jumped to 4.15 from 2.54.

“This one is definitely going to be an important game for me and I’m going to be prepared for it,” Ely said. But, he added, “I can’t go in thinking that it’s too big of a deal. You can’t put too much added pressure on yourself. I’m just going to approach it the way I approach every game.”

Ely, 24, said he hasn’t lost his confidence. “Not at all,” he said. “All I’ve got to do is stick to what I know I’m capable of doing and I can get outs at this level, I know I can.”

“It’s important that he pitches well for his confidence,” Torre said, adding that a key factor in his rebound would be throwing early strikes.

“You need to get ahead in the count at least more often than he has in his last few starts,” Torre said. “He didn’t throw as many strikes with his breaking ball during these last few games that he hasn’t pitched well.”

The Dodgers said the annual Hollywood Stars game would be Aug. 7 at Dodger Stadium before the Dodgers play the Washington Nationals.
