Justine Henin, Andy Roddick advance in Florida tournament

Justine Henin made another comeback Wednesday.

The former No. 1, playing her fourth tournament since coming out of retirement, rallied to beat No. 2-seeded Caroline Wozniacki 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the Sony Ericsson Open at Key Biscayne, Fla.

Andy Roddick advanced to the men’s semifinals when he beat No. 33-seeded Nicolas Almagro 6-3, 6-3. Roddick, the 2004 champion, has yet to drop a set and has been broken once in four matches.

Roddick, seeded sixth, committed only 10 unforced errors in 110 points against Almagro. Roddick improved to 24-4 this year, and he leads the men’s tour in victories.

The first football game in the new Meadowlands Stadium will be between the owners of the $1.6 billion facility.

The NFL announced Wednesday that the Giants and Jets will play the first game Aug. 16 when they meet Monday night in the preseason opener for both teams.

The Dallas Cowboys will play the Cincinnati Bengals in the Pro Football Hall of Fame game to open the NFL’s preseason schedule in Canton, Ohio, on Aug. 8.

Carolina will play at Baltimore on Thursday night, Aug. 12, then the Jets and Giants meet the following Monday before the rest of the league gets into action later in the week.

Super Bowl champion New Orleans opens the preseason at New England. The date is still to be determined.

The Buffalo Bills have signed free agent receiver Chad Jackson and re-signed cornerback Ashton Youboty.

Jackson missed last season after being waived by Denver in September. He’s played parts of three NFL seasons, and broke into the league in 2006 after being drafted in the second round by New England.

Youboty was a restricted free agent, who returns for his fourth season in Buffalo.

Arsenal withstood an onslaught from Barcelona to salvage a 2-2 draw and keep alive hopes of beating the defending champion to a spot in the Champions League semifinals, while Inter Milan has the edge over CSKA Moscow after a 1-0 win on Wednesday.

However, Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas may have broken a leg while scoring the tying penalty kick, an injury that could sideline him for the World Cup.

Fabregas said he may have damaged his fibula when he was fouled by Carles Puyol, then struck the penalty kick with great force.

Barcelona comprehensively outplayed Arsenal for the first hour at Emirates Stadium and led through two goals by Zlatan Ibrahimovic before substitute Theo Walcott got a goal back in the 66th and Fabregas equalized in the 85th with a penalty.

Minnesota Twins leadoff man Denard Span hit a hard foul ball that struck his mom in the chest during a spring training game in Tampa, Fla. She was treated by paramedics and back in the stands minutes later.

“My mom is feeling ok right now!” Span later posted on his Twitter account.

Wanda Wilson was wearing a Span jersey and sitting with family friends near the third-base dugout. Span took a defensive swing in the first inning and sent a liner into the seats, hitting her near the shoulder.

Mariners left-hander Cliff Lee got through a light workout Wednesday without pain, but is still likely to start the season on the disabled list because of a strained abdomen.

Houston first baseman Lance Berkman has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a nagging left knee injury.

Berkman had arthroscopic surgery on March 13 after the knee swelled in the first days of spring training. The team initially said Berkman would miss two to four weeks.

Major League Baseball is exploring the possibility of sending two teams to Italy for a few spring training games next year or in 2012.

International Baseball Federation President Riccardo Fraccari told The Associated Press that MLB officials recently scouted several locations: Nettuno, near Rome; Parma; and Palermo and Messina in Sicily.

NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin is home resting following surgery on his left knee.

Hamlin tore his anterior cruciate ligament playing basketball in January.

He wanted to postpone surgery until after the NASCAR season, but decided to have it repaired this week. The surgery had been postponed from Monday, the same day Hamlin won his first race of the season at Martinsville Speedway.

Fred Couples and Greg Norman are returning as captains for the 2011 Presidents Cup in Australia, the only place where the International team has won.

It will be the third time since the Presidents Cup began in 1994 that captains served in successive matches. Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player were captains for three straight Presidents Cups.

The Presidents Cup will be played next year at Royal Melbourne. The matches last were played there in 1998, when the International team won, 201/2-111/2.

The United States leads the series, 6-1-1.

A Duke lacrosse coach fired after a stripper falsely accused three players of rape in 2006 has ended his slander lawsuit against the university.

Attorney Jay Trehy said that Mike Pressler was dismissing his claims, though he declined to discuss the terms of how the matter was resolved. Duke officials publicly apologized to Pressler for two media stories.

Pressler had settled with the school after he was fired. Both sides agreed not to make disparaging comments about each other. The coach later complained about comments that a Duke spokesman made to Newsday and The Associated Press in 2007.

Pressler now coaches at Bryant University and for the 2010 U.S. men’s lacrosse team.

Tennessee has written some hefty protection both for the program and the coach into its deal with new Coach Derek Dooley.

The university released the memorandum of understanding signed by Dooley on March 3.

Dooley would have to pay $4 million if he resigns before Feb. 15, 2012, a number that drops to $3 million through the next year.

He would pay $1 million to buy out his contract starting Feb. 16, 2013, $750,000 a year later, and $500,000 in 2015.

Tennessee’s buyout to get rid of Dooley is even steeper. He would be owed $5 million through Feb. 15, 2013, a number that drops to $4 million into 2014 and 2015. The buyout falls to $2.5 million after Feb. 15, 2015.
