Santa Margarita takes down Carson, 56-14
Carson came into its intersectional clash against Santa Margarita on Friday with the momentum of two early season victories and a No. 19 ranking in the Southland by The Times, but the Eagles deserved all the accolades after a 56-14 victory at Saddleback College.
Santa Margarita quarterback Adam Young completed all three of his touchdown passes in the first half, and the Eagles forced a turnover, recovered a blocked punt in the end zone and made a fourth-down stop on the way to a 42-7 halftime lead.
“It was a total shock,” Santa Margarita Coach Harry Welch said of the lopsided nature of the victory. “They have speed and quickness that we just can’t touch. On the other hand, I believe we’re a good football team.”
Even with leading rusher Cory Thomson sidelined by a high ankle sprain early in the game, the Eagles (2-1) scored on all five of their first-half drives. Things were going so well that a busted play turned into a five-yard gain when 6-foot-6, 254-pound lineman Max Tuerk took a lateral from Young and chugged up the field for a first down.
Young finished the game completing nine of 15 passes for 129 yards, and sophomore running back Ryan Wolpin rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns in 16 carries. Wolpin also caught a 16-yard touchdown pass.
In a sign of things to come for Carson (2-1), quarterback Justin Alo had his first pass of the game intercepted and wasn’t able to sustain many drives. He completed 18 of 31 passes for 203 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions.
“Sometimes, you take a lump upside the head and you learn from it,” Carson Coach Elijah Asante said.

Corona Centennial defeats Mater Dei
No. 8 Corona Centennial’s 44-13 victory over Santa Ana Mater Dei brought to light the Huskies seemingly unstoppable no-huddle offense and the Monarchs poor execution.
The defeat also marked the Monarchs’ (0-2) most lopsided loss since a 48-7 drubbing to Mission Viejo in 2005.
It didn’t take long for the Huskies (2-0) to showcase their offensive dominance. They scored on their first two drives and opened up a 37-0 halftime lead.
Corona Centennial led in the air. Senior quarterback Michael Eubank finished 11 of 17 for 200 yards with one interception and two touchdowns, both which went to senior wide receiver Eric Finney. The Huskies led on the ground. Eubank finished with 13 carries for 180 yards, while senior tailback Barrinton Collins had 17 carries for 121 yards and a touchdown.
Mater Dei senior quarterback Max Wittek went 11 for 25 for 176 yards with two interceptions.
