The Tiyya Foundation

Meymuna Hussein-Cattan, an East African refugee, is the founder of The Tiyya Foundation, which supports refugees, immigrants, and displaced indigenous communities in Southern California. Since 2010, Tiyya has assisted over 1,000 families through housing, economic, and educational opportunities. Facing challenges, she revitalized the foundation during the pandemic and launched the Flavors from Afar Restaurant, showcasing refugee and asylum seekers’ culinary traditions. Tiyya’s initiatives have led to over $1.6 million in wages for program participants and the resettlement of 30 Afghan families. Hussein-Cattan’s commitment to the immigrant community also extends to her studies at the Institute of Culinary Education, deepening her understanding of their experiences.
