Lexus to unveil all-new F model at Detroit Auto Show
Lexus will be bringing some heat to the Detroit Auto Show, announcing that the automaker will debut an entirely new F model in January.
“Engineered from scratch, one performance layer at a time, the newest F model promises a bold, gritty, experience synonymous with the famed Lexus F heritage,” the automaker said in a statement.
Toyota’s luxury division was mum on other details about the car, releasing only the teaser image above. Lexus’ F models are a performance variant of existing vehicles, similar to BMW’s M division or Mercedes-Benz’ AMG.
In that light, it would make sense that the car was the new IS-F, seeing as an all-new version of the regular IS went on sale this year. Yet based on a close look at the photo Lexus released -- and the fact that the automaker said the car would be “an entirely new model” -- we’re likely looking at a zestier version of the RC Coupe.
That car debuted at the recent Tokyo Motor Show in November. Based on the rear-wheel-drive GS sedan, the RC Coupe will come with either a 314-horsepower V-6 or a 217-horsepower hybrid.
The coupe’s styling is unique to that model, including a distinct character line that starts at the corner of the front bumper under the headlight, and arches up the front fender towards the side mirror. You can see the same line on the teaser image of the F model headed to Detroit.
What would power the RC-F Coupe remains unknown. The current IS-F that Lexus will phase out after next year uses a 416-horsepower, 5.0-liter V-8 and an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.
We’ll get a better sense of what this mystery F model will look like later in December. The full reveal will happen at the Detroit Auto Show on January 13.
