Two people were killed and at least three others were wounded in a shooting early Thursday at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita.
Here is what we know:
Details
- Authorities described the gunman as a 16-year-old boy who they thought had fled the campus after the shooting but had actually turned the gun on himself after opening fire in the school’s quad. Law enforcement said the suspect, identified by neighbors and Sheriff’s Department officials as Nathaniel Berhow, was taken into custody. He is being treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound to the head, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Capt. Kent Wegener said. Thursday is the suspect’s 16th birthday, authorities said.
- Two students — a 16-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy — died at the hospital. Three other students — a 15-year-old girl, a 14-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy — were hospitalized with injuries. At least one was released by early afternoon.
Advisories
- Authorities are urging people to avoid the area, and several streets around the school and nearby neighborhoods have been closed.
- The Sheriff’s Department set up a family reunification center at Central Park on Bouquet Canyon Road.
Closures
- All schools in the William S. Hart Union High School District will be closed Friday, authorities said.
- Deputy Supt. Mike Kuhlman said in a message to school families, “We are all grieving and in shock as a result of today’s terrible events.”
Services and vigils
- Valencia Hills Community Church held a service at 1 p.m. Thursday for families and students.
- The city of Santa Clarita will open its Activities Center from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday for students and community members. Counseling services will be available.
- Crossroads Community Church, at 25300 Rye Canyon Road, is offering services at 6 p.m. Thursday.
- St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, at 24901 Orchard Village Road, is hosting a 7 p.m. prayer service Thursday.
- A vigil is planned for 7 p.m. Sunday at Central Park, at 7150 Bouquet Canyon Road.
