Ticket sales say ‘Bring It On’; Broadway run extends to Jan. 20

The Broadway run of the high-flying cheerleading musical “Bring It On” is heading into overtime. Producers of the show said that they are extending its limited engagement through Jan. 20 at the St. James Theater in New York. The musical had been scheduled to run through Oct. 7.

“Bring It On,” which is inspired by the 2000 movie of the same name starring Kirsten Dunst, tells the story of perky cheer captain Campbell, who gets reassigned from her affluent high school to an urban district. She eventually leads her new school in a cheer competition against her old teammates.

The musical opened a national tour last year at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles. (It had its world premiere at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre earlier that year.)

The previous tenant of New York’s St. James was another musical with L.A. connections, “Leap of Faith,” which closed in May after less than a month of regular performances.

“Bring it On” has seen decent business during its preview period, with performances playing to approximately 90% capacity. The show, which officially opened Aug. 1, features an A-list writing team that includes Lin-Manuel Miranda, Tom Kitt, Jeff Whitty and Amanda Green.

It is the first new musical of the 2012-13 Broadway season.
