Carey Mulligan, Bill Nighy returning to Broadway in ‘Skylight’

Carey Mulligan and Bill Nighy will reprise their London stage roles when they take David Hare’s “Skylight” to Broadway in 2015. The drama, about a female schoolteacher who receives a visit from a former, much older lover, is scheduled to open April 2 at the John Golden Theatre in New York.

“Skylight” will join a number of British imports vying for attention on Broadway this season. Other productions include “The Audience,” starring Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II; “The River,” starring Hugh Jackman; and the National Theatre’s adaptation of the novel “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.”

Hare has seen several of his plays reach Broadway, including a 2006 run of “The Vertical Hour,” starring Nighy and Julianne Moore; a 1999 run of “Amy’s View,” with Judi Dench; and a 1998 run of “The Blue Room,” starring a briefly nude Nicole Kidman.

“Skylight,” directed by Stephen Daldry, recently concluded its run at Wyndham’s Theatre in London, receiving largely favorable critical notices. The play was first performed in 1995 at the National.

For those unable to make it to New York, “Skylight” is scheduled to be broadcast to cinemas around the world starting Oct. 23 as part of the NT Live series.

Mulligan previously appeared on Broadway in 2008 in Chekhov’s “The Seagull,” with Kristin Scott Thomas. She also starred in a 2011 off-Broadway production of “Through a Glass Darkly” from the Atlantic Theater Company.
