For ‘Frozen’ fans, let the waiting begin: Broadway musical sets opening for spring 2018

Fans of “Frozen” will have to wait two more years before the highly anticipated musical stage adaptation opens on Broadway.

Disney announced Tuesday that the new version of the hit animated movie is set to open in New York in spring 2018. The company said that casting, dates and venue will be announced later.

Alex Timbers, who has staged shows as diverse as “Peter and the Starcatcher” and “Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson” will direct “Frozen,” Disney said.

As previously announced, Jennifer Lee, who co-directed the movie and wrote the screenplay, will work on the book for the musical. The songwriting team of Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, who won an Oscar for the song “Let It Go,” also will be working on the show.

“Frozen” opened in movie theaters in 2013 and went on to gross close to $1.3 billion worldwide. The movie won two Academy Awards, including the prize for animated feature.

The movie tells the story of two siblings -- Elsa, who harbors the power to create ice and snow, and her sister, Anna. It is inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen tale “The Snow Queen.”

The planned stage adaptation of “Frozen” would be the latest screen-to-stage project from Disney Theatrical, following such musicals as “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Lion King” and “Aladdin.” The latter two shows are still running on Broadway. “The Lion King,” which opened in 1997, was the top-grossing show on Broadway for 2015.

For fans who simply can’t wait for the new Broadway musical, a separate “Frozen” show is scheduled to open this summer at the Disney California Adventure park in Anaheim. The production is slated to debut at the Hyperion Theater, which had been the home of “Disney’s Aladdin -- A Musical Spectacular.”
