Singer k.d. lang to make Broadway debut in ‘After Midnight’ musical
Genre-bending singer k.d. lang this winter will make her Broadway debut in “After Midnight,” the jazzy tribute to Duke Ellington’s years at the Cotton Club.
The production, with musical direction by Wynton Marsalis and directed overall by Warren Carlyle, will preview Oct. 18 ahead of a Nov. 3 opening at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre.
Lang’s limited engagement will run Feb. 11 through March 9.
The Grammy-winning crooner will succeed the previously announced Fantasia Barrino as the musical’s star vocalist. Lang and Barrino will be backed by a 17-piece big band playing Ellington’s original arrangements, which will be paired with poetry by Langston Hughes.
The musical opened last year off-Broadway at New York City Center as “Cotton Club Parade” and underwent the name change prior to its Broadway debut.
Tickets featuring lang’s performance will go on sale Nov. 4.
The singer will soon have a show closer to home: The Hammer Museum announced Monday that lang will perform at its 11th annual fundraising gala Oct. 5.
