Former MOCA curator resigns as head of Amsterdam museum
In an interesting twist for those watching the empty chair in the director’s office at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam director Ann Goldstein has resigned from that position. Goldstein has been identified as a possible successor to departing MOCA director Jeffery Deitch.
Goldstein, who was senior curator at MOCA before she left to direct the Stedelijk, will leave the Amsterdam museum’s top job Dec. 1. She has been director since January 2010.
Goldstein led the Stedelijk through the final years of a massive renovation -- altogether it had been closed for nine years. It reopened in 2012. It organized a large retrospective of the work of Mike Kelley, a show that will be seen at MOCA in March.
Goldstein’s name was suggested as a possible MOCA director by several observers after Deitch’s resignation in July because of her connection to MOCA and her experience leading a major art museum.
She is reportedly a friend of one of the search committee’s leaders, former Los Angeles City Councilman Joel Wachs, a one-time MOCA trustee who is now president of New York’s Andy Warhol Foundation. Wachs will work with MOCA board chairs Maria Bell and David Johnson in the search for a successor to Deitch.
