The Getty Museum acquires a collection of 18th century French decorative arts

The Getty Museum announced Tuesday that it has acquired an important collection of 18th century French decorative arts.
The 31 elaborate works, a combined gift and purchase from economist Horace Wood Brock, includes seven clocks, a pair of candelabra in gilt bronze, two sets of vases, a porcelain inkstand and a carved gilt-wood console table. Museum director Timothy Potts called the objects the most significant of their kind acquired by the museum in years.
The pieces were produced in Paris and represent the excellence of artistry at that time, the museum said. The objects were meant to signal the good taste, wealth and status of their owners, and they cover a range of styles, including the opulent late Baroque and the more restrained neoclassical.
Brock has been collecting French and English decorative arts for more than 30 years.
