‘Twilight’ director Bill Condon to stage ‘Side Show’ at La Jolla

Bill Condon hit the Hollywood jackpot when he was hired to direct the final two installments of the “Twilight” franchise. Following his sojourn into teen-vampire territory -- the final installment opens in November -- Condon will head for the stage to direct a revival production of “Side Show” debuting at the La Jolla Playhouse next year.

“Side Show” -- a musical about the real-life conjoined twins Violet and Daisy Hilton -- is set to open at the La Jolla Playhouse in the fall of 2013 and will then transfer to the Kennedy Center in Washington in June 2014.

The musical features music by Henry Krieger, the composer behind “Dreamgirls.” (Condon directed the movie version of “Dreamgirls” in 2006.)

The La Jolla Playhouse said Tuesday that the revival production will be a “re-imagined” version of “Side Show.” The musical opened on Broadway in 1997 and starred Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner as the Hilton twins, who became performers in a live touring show. The actresses shared a joint Tony nomination for their performances.

Condon has focused almost entirely on movies throughout his career. He won an Oscar for his screenplay for “Gods and Monsters,” the 1998 movie that he also directed.
