ABC veteran Brian Morewitz has been tapped to head drama development at the network.

New ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey, who had overseen drama development until last month, announced Morewitz as her successor as drama chief on Tuesday.

In his new role, Morewitz will oversee the development and production of all drama pilots and the launch of new drama series for ABC. He will report directly to Dungey.

Morewitz previously served as vice president of drama development, a position he stepped into in 2004. During his tenure, he has shepherded such series as “Quantico,” “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and “American Crime.”

Prior to joining ABC, Morewitz worked in the motion picture industry. He was senior vice president of Sony-based Escape Artists, where he helped develop feature films, including “Knowing,” starring Nicolas Cage, and “S.W.A.T.” He also held development positions at Black and Blu Entertainment and Lucas Foster Productions. He began his career as a story editor for New Line Cinema.

Morewitz’s promotion to senior vice president of drama development marks one of Dungey’s first appointments as ABC boss, a position she stepped into in February after Paul Lee was forced out.
