Tony Awards 2014: Woody Allen will be a no-show, per tradition
Woody Allen’s feelings about awards shows are well known. He wasn’t present to pick up any of his four Academy Awards and skipped out of this year’s Golden Globes ceremony, where he was the recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award.
So what are the chances that Allen will actually show up for tonight’s Tony Awards, where he is a first-time nominee for writing the musical “Bullets Over Broadway”?
Essentially zero. Chris Boneau, an official spokesman for “Bullets,” confirmed via email that Allen won’t be in attendance at the Tonys, saying that the writer-director “never goes to awards. Long-standing tradition for him.”
“Bullets,” which Allen adapted from his own 1994 movie but didn’t direct, is up for six Tonys, though it failed to land a nomination for new musical. Broadway veteran Susan Stroman directed the production, which opened at the St. James Theatre in New York in April.
The musical’s producers include Letty Aronson, who is Allen’s sister and longtime film producer, and Julian Schlossberg.
Despite his aversion to awards shows, Allen was present at a Tony press junket held in New York the day after the nominations were announced April 29. At the event, Allen posed for photographs along with Stroman and actor Nick Cordero, who is nominated for his role in the musical as Cheech, a gangster with untapped playwriting talents.
