Hollywood and Broadway team up for live-streaming Hillary Clinton fundraiser
Stars of stage and screen are teaming up to put on a show Monday night and are aiming to live-stream their efforts straight into your homes.
An event called “Stronger Together,” hosted by Billy Crystal and featuring such luminaries as Julia Roberts, Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Bette Midler and Angela Bassett, gives the Hollywood and Broadway elite the opportunity to use their collective star power to political ends on behalf of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
The program, produced by Jordan Roth, Richie Jackson, Stephen Schwartz and Harvey Weinstein, would cost a person $125 to $10,000 to see in person at the St. James Theatre in New York City, but denizens of the Internet will be able to witness the grand spectacle as it streams live on Clinton’s YouTube and Facebook pages.
The full list of performances contains a staggering amount of stage talent and a not unsubtle number of selections regarding the unyielding threat of fascism. Performances are expected to include Joel Grey and Sienna Miller performing “Wilkommen/Cabaret” from “Cabaret,” Barbra Streisand and Jamie Foxx performing “Climb Ev’ry Mountain” from “The Sound of Music,” and Jon Hamm and Jake Gyllenhaal, in what will likely be a scene from “It Can’t Happen Here,” a 1936 play that adapts the eponymous 1935 Sinclair Lewis novel about a fascist takeover of America.
Other performances feature feel-good pairings of partners, including husband and wife Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker and former “Hamilton” co-stars Lin-Manuel Miranda and Renée Elise Goldsberry.
As impressive as the celebrity-rich cast for the event may be, the real genius may be in the fact that the Clinton campaign has figured out a way to reach a worldwide audience via multimedia, while skirting equal time restrictions.
While Republican nominee Donald Trump has also live-streamed previous fundraisers, none has been quite this celebrity-packed.
While the candidate herself will not be present for the festivities, former first daughter Chelsea Clinton will be on hand to take in the musical and theatrical moments.
“Stronger Together” will be available to stream on Clinton’s YouTube, Facebook and campaign page starting at 5:30 p.m.
