Gwen Stefani was ‘embarrassed’ after split but not ashamed: ‘I’ve done nothing wrong’

Gwen Stefani was “so embarrassed” when her marriage broke up, a raw experience she’s channeled into her latest hit album. Her biggest supporter? Boyfriend Blake Shelton. With a little public flirting, the singer is making sure Stefani knows he’s got her back.

After bragging that Stefani’s new record was topping iTunes’ album chart, he added, “Hey @gwenstefani... My favorite song on your album is ‘Rare’.. Just thought I’d let you know.” Then he posted a shot of his multiple copies of his girlfriend’s CD, saying he “may have gone overboard.”

“Rare” would be the song about the two of them. Sample lyrics: “You’re a sapphire, you’re a rolling stone / You’re a sparkle in a deep black hole / You’re like moonshine, when the curtains close / You’re my answer, one that no one knows.”

She also declares “only a stupid girl would let you go,” but whether she’s referencing Miranda Lambert or herself is anyone’s guess.

When Stefani and Gavin Rossdale split, “everything was like, I had no skin, it was so raw, you know what I mean,” she said in a “CBS Sunday Morning” interview set to air this weekend. “And nobody knew what was happening and I had this big secret.”

Buzz was that the Bush frontman’s alleged three-year affair with their nanny (who’s now reportedly dating a snowboarding instructor and pregnant, and doesn’t look nearly as much like Stefani as she used to) was what ended things, though neither of the exes has confirmed that.

Still ...

“During that time period, I felt like, I was down all the way. Like you don’t go down lower than that,” the No Doubt singer told CBS. “It was rock bottom. I was so embarrassed, you know what I mean? I was like, ‘Wow, I can’t. I have to turn this into something. I can’t go down like this. Like if I can do music, then maybe just everything will be OK.”

But she’s not blaming herself for anything.

“I don’t feel like I have anything to be ashamed of,” the 46-year-old told Time. “I’ve done nothing wrong. I don’t feel like I have anything to protect about myself. But when you’re a mother, you have to have some boundaries.” Shoot, that makes it sound like her lips are sealed.

Shelton has already said in a court filing (he sued Bauer Media for defamation in October over InTouch Weekly cover stories that said he was cheating on Lambert and had to go to alcohol rehab; the outlet is currently fighting to have the case dismissed) that he “did not have a sexual relationship or an affair of any nature whatsoever” with a woman who was a friend during his marriage.

So, nothing wrong on his end either?

The country star’s new tune “Came Here to Forget” seems to reference how he and Stefani got close while they commiserated about their breakups.

“First of all we came here to forget,” the song goes. “Looks like it’s just me and you / Falling in love just enough to get us through / While we’re getting through.”
