Benedict Cumberbatch has finally revealed the gray hair, the cape, the Eye of Agomotto and the ever-important goatee that define the master of the mystic arts, Dr. Strange, in his role for Marvel’s self-titled film. Meet the next Marvel hero.

Principle photography on “Doctor Strange” just began in November, but images by Entertainment Weekly are already popping up and revealing the “Sherlock” star in full mystic mode, embracing some of the sorcerer’s visual traits.

So what’s there to know about Doctor Strange? The character was created by artist Steve Ditko in 1963. And yes, Strange is an actual doctor. He’s a former surgeon who loses the ability to use his hands medically. This brings a new calling, and Strange becomes the Sorcerer Supreme, a protector of the planet from supernatural and mystical danger.

EW has also revealed that actor Mads Mikkelsen of “Hannibal” fame will star as the unnamed, main movie villain. It has not been revealed exactly which character Mikkelsen will be playing. Rival sorcerer Baron Mordo has often been the central adversary for Dr. Strange, but he will be played by Chiwetel Ejiofor. “Doctor Strange” will also star Tilda Swinton (as Strange’s mentor the Ancient One), and Rachel McAdams.
