IDW is bringing ‘Locke & Key’ to the small screen
“Locke & Key,” a comic book property that follows the Locke family as they face numerous magic and evil situations, is being developed as a television series with creator Joe Hill writing the pilot and serving as an executive producer.
IDW Entertainment is developing the Eisner Award-winning book, which was illustrated by Gabriel Rodriguez, as a straight-to-series project and will maintain worldwide rights. Along with “Locke & Key,” New York Times bestselling author Hill has written the popular novels “Heart-Shaped Box,” “N0S4A2,” and “Horns,” which was adapted into a film starring Daniel Radcliffe.
“I love this story,” said Hill in a statement. “The seven years I spent working on ‘Locke & Key’ was the happiest creative experience of my life, and there still isn’t a day when I don’t think about those characters and miss visiting with them. The six books of the series are very like six seasons of a cable TV series, and so it feels only natural to bring that world to the little screen.”
“Locke & Key” has been down this road before. The series was made into a pilot back in 2010. A consortium of powerful producers, including Steven Spielberg, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, backed the show, and a pilot was shot with a cast including Miranda Otto, Sarah Bolger, Nick Stahl, Jesse McCartney, Ksenia Solo and more. Despite the star power in front of and behind the camera, and a strong response at Comic-Con, Fox decided that the project would not be made into a series.
IDWE is currently distributing “Wynonna Earp,” which airs on Syfy.
