New ‘Wonder Woman’ trailer explores Diana Prince’s past

It’s finally here. Seventy-five years after Wonder Woman made her comic book debut, and nearly two weeks after being named a real life honorary U.N. ambassador, the first proper trailer for “Wonder Woman,” has been released.
Fans got their first glimpse of Gal Gadot as the Amazonian warrior when Wonder Woman made her big-screen debut in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” earlier this year. But “Wonder Woman” is the first stand-alone film about the icon. Anticipation and expectations for the Patty Jenkins-helmed DC superhero feature have been high, fueled by the official Comic-Con trailer.
It opens with a voice-over that hints at what’s to come.
“I used to want to save the world,” says Diana, as scenes of her in Themyscira are shown. “This beautiful place. But the closer you get, the more you see the great darkness within. I learned this the hard way a long, long time ago.”

Themyscira, of course, is Diana’s homeland. As the secluded island’s sole inhabitants are her fellow Amazons, everything from the outside world — including men and their bullets — are foreign to the princess. And it looks like Wonder Woman was exposed to bullets and war, which perhaps changed her attitude about saving the world.
The film is set 100 years ago, during “the war to end all wars.” The trailer goes on to show Diana as she decides to leave her island sanctuary to join Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) on his mission because she can’t just stand by while innocent lives are lost.
Plenty of action is shown, including Wonder Woman battling with her sword and shield, deflecting bullets with her indestructible bracelets and tossing around some foes with her golden lasso of truth.
Don’t worry: It’s not all action. It looks as though Diana’s lack of knowledge about the outside world, specifically her confusion about the role of women in society, will provide a bit of levity (in addition to social commentary).
“Wonder Woman” is scheduled to hit theaters June 2. Watch the full trailer above.
