Jim Carrey: Life in Pictures
Jim Carrey
No laughing matter
Growing up, Jim Carreys life was nothing to laugh about. “I had a sick mom, man, he told 60 Minutes. It was his mothers illness, in fact, that motivated Carrey to attempt comedy. I wanted to make her feel better. I’d bounce off the walls and throw myself down the stairs to make her feel better.” A comedian was born. (Brad Barket / Getty Images)
Anger
Carreys entire family worked as security guards and janitors to make ends meet. The actor told 60 Minutes that the poverty left him furious: “I was angry at the world for doing that to my father. I wanted to bash somebody’s head in, basically.” (Gary He / AP)
His cause
Carrey created an ad for the Human Rights Action Center and the U.S. Campaign for Burma to help free Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, who is under house arrest in Myanmar for working against Gen. Than Shwes oppressive military regime. (Gary He / AP)
Down time
When life gets to be too much, Carrey retreats to the beach. He vacations in Hawaii or kicks back at his Malibu pad. He spends the day reading scripts and taking eight-mile jogs on the sand. Thats a lot of miles! (Clarence Williams / Los Angeles Times)
