Quick Takes: ‘Sister Wives’ family challenges bigamy law

The polygamous family featured on cable television’s “Sister Wives” challenged the bigamy law that makes their lifestyle illegal Wednesday.

Attorney Jonathan Turley filed a lawsuit challenging the Utah law in Salt Lake City’s U.S. District Court.

Turley represents Kody Brown and his four wives — Meri, Janelle, Christine and Robyn. Kody Brown is legally married only to Meri Brown.

The Browns belong to the Apostolic United Brethren church, which practices polygamy as part of its faith.

The Browns and their 16 kids moved to Nevada in January after Utah authorities launched a bigamy investigation. No charges were ever filed, but Tuesday, Utah County Atty. Jeff Buhman said the investigation is ongoing.

Eva Longoria’s Vegas club closes

A Las Vegas nightclub owned by “Desperate Housewives” costar Eva Longoria is temporary closing its doors amid financial troubles.

Longoria’s Beso club within the CityCenter complex on the Las Vegas Strip closed Monday to save money.

Beso LLC bankruptcy attorney Lenard Schwartzer said Wednesday that the restaurant attached to the club will remain open because it is profitable. The nightclub could eventually be renovated and reopened, he said.

When it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January, Beso LLC said it was nearly $5.7 million in debt and was losing more than $76,000 per month.

Longoria owns nearly one-third of the business but is also listed as an unsecured creditor.

Report OKs D.C. police escort for Charlie Sheen

District of Columbia officers who gave a police escort with sirens and flashing lights to actor Charlie Sheen from a northern Virginia airport to a city performance did not violate department policies, according to a new report that calls such escorts a routine and accepted practice.

The 82-page report issued this week by the city’s Office of Inspector General appears to conflict with statements from Police Chief Cathy Lanier, who has said the April 19 escort from Dulles International Airport to Constitution Hall broke with police protocol.

The ride given to Sheen, which attracted attention after the fired “Two and a Half Men” actor wrote about it on his Twitter account, led to dueling accounts from the chief and department members about whether escorts for celebrities and non-dignitaries were standard practice in the agency.

Ted Danson joins ‘CSI’ team

The “CSI” crew will have a new boss in the fall: Ted Danson.

The busy former “Cheers” leading man — lately seen in “Damages,” “Bored to Death” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” among other places — will play the new CSI supervisor, who previously ran the crime lab in Portland, Ore.

He comes to the team after the recent sudden exit of Laurence Fishburne, who many fans felt never jelled in his role as Dr. Raymond Langston.

According to CBS, Danson will retain his costarring role on the HBO comedy “Bored to Death.”

Web prelude for ‘Apes’ prequel

Blending the line between the silver screen and the comics pages, publisher Boom! Studios is publishing a prelude to the upcoming prequel to “Planet of the Apes” to give would-be viewers a leg up on the film’s premise.

The publisher, in conjunction with 20th Century Fox, said Wednesday that it will publish an online-only 10-page prelude that lays the groundwork for the story in “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” with weekly installments through Aug. 3, two days before the film is released.

The story, written by Daryl Gregory and illustrated by Damian Couceiro and Tony Parker, focuses on two apes taken into captivity and used for experiments. Readers can find out what happens by going to https://www.apescomics.com.

Gloria Allred to don judge’s robe

Pretty soon, attorney Gloria Allred will be before the TV cameras for a reason other than representing high-profile clients.

The lawyer, who has represented alleged mistresses of Tiger Woods, a former Britney Spears bodyguard and others, will be the star of “We the People With Gloria Allred.”

According to Broadcasting & Cable, Allred will serve as the judge on the courtroom show, which has been picked up by NBC affiliates in Los Angeles, New York, San Diego, San Francisco and elsewhere.

The show is slated to begin this fall.
