Destination: Cocktail
Open since May, Onyx Lounge is located in a 1906 building in downtown L.A.’s historic core. Like many of downtown’s new wave of bars and restaurants, the Onyx Lounge strives to connect with its neighborhood. Mixologist Douglas Williams (Cana Rum Bar, the Tar Pit) has crafted a number of smooth, highly localized cocktails including the Angel’s Flight (a compelling mixture of saffron-infused gin and lemon juice) and a refreshing elixir called Pirate’s Booty. The drink is named for a colorful neighborhood denizen, Ricky Taylor, who favors pirate hats for sartorial flair. Rum, cinnamon, lemon and grapefruit juice mix nicely for snappy sipping that will have you humming, “Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.”
Pirate’s Booty by Douglas Williams
1 1/2 ounces El Dorado 12-year rum
1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice
1/2 ounce Don’s mix (Williams uses two parts cinnamon syrup to one part fresh grapefruit juice)

Shake and strain into a Champagne flute, top with dry prosecco; Williams uses Val d’Oca Millesimato.
