AFI Fest adds ‘The 33’ and ‘Where to Invade Next’ to its slate

AFI Fest has announced a new batch of movies for its annual gathering next month.

The Los Angeles-based film festival will screen the Chilean miner drama “The 33” and Michael Moore’s documentary “Where to Invade Next” as centerpiece galas on Nov. 9 and Nov. 7, respectively.

Directed by Patricia Riggen, “The 33” stars Antonio Banderas and Juliette Binoche and focuses on the heroic rescue of trapped miners in 2010. “Where to Invade Next” is Moore’s globe-trotting movie about domestic policies in other countries, particularly European ones, that America might adopt for itself. The movie, Moore’s first in six years, premiered to strong reviews at the Toronto International Film Festival last month. Both it and “33” are scheduled to open in theaters before the end of the year.

AFI organizers have also added other festival favorites to its 2015 slate. Among them are Todd Haynes’ lesbian drama “Carol,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ dystopian black comedy “The Lobster” and Justin Kurzel’s take on “Macbeth,” all of which debuted at Cannes; Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson’s stop-motion drama “Anomalisa,” which played the Venice-Telluride-Toronto circuit; and “45 Years,” Andrew Haigh’s look at the pressures on a longstanding marriage that premiered in Berlin.

This year’s edition of AFI Fest will take place Nov. 5-12 at multiple theaters in Hollywood. It will open with the world premiere of “By The Sea,” Angelina Jolie’s latest directorial effort.
