To the surprise of no one, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” is looking strong in its opening swing through the box office this weekend, pulling in $35.5 million Friday night, according to estimates.
The numbers add to the $8.7-million Thursday night haul for the big-budget sequel, which follows the 2012 franchise reboot with Andrew Garfield in the lead role. The film is the fifth to star the web-spinning Marvel Comics superhero in 14 years.
The film is slightly behind the pace of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” which took in more than $37 million on its Friday night debut a month ago. That film posted $95 million in ticket sales over its opening weekend, which is the same number predicted for “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” according to those who have seen prerelease audience surveys.

The “Captain America” sequel also added to its big numbers, bringing in an estimated $2 million Friday to land in fourth place. The film has sold in excess of $231 million in tickets since its April release.
Last weekend’s box-office champ, “The Other Woman,” landed well behind that blockbuster pace on Friday, taking in an estimated $4.8 million for second place. In third place, “Heaven Is Real” collected an estimated $2.4 million and “Rio 2” rounded out the top five with $1.7 million, according to estimates.
