Desert Trip ticket holders are getting further proof this week that the mega-rock concert next month in Indio will be a cut above the garden-variety rock summit meeting.

Anyone who bought single-day or three-day general admission or reserved seat passes for the shows with Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, the Who, Neil Young and Roger Waters will receive an elaborate “welcome box” assembled by event promoter Goldenvoice

It contains admission wristbands, instructions on how to activate them, a 36-page Desert Trip “Welcome Guide” booklet outlining various other features concertgoers will encounter and tips about navigating the shows scheduled for Oct. 7-9 and 14-16 at the Empire Polo Field in Indio.

In addition, the box, similar to what Goldenvoice sends out each year to Coachella festival-goers, includes a throwback Viewmaster-type 3-D slide viewer with two sets of circular slides that will look familiar to many of the baby boomers who will be one of the key constituencies of the concerts. One set includes 3-D images of each of the six acts; the other highlights desert scenes from the Indio region.

The Times has prepared an unboxing video to illustrate the different elements of the welcome box.

A “limited number” of additional passes will go on sale at 1 p.m. Pacific time Saturday at the DesertTrip website, Goldenvoice said.
