Green Day releases new single and video from ‘Twilight’ soundtrack
Wondering where the plaintive piano and sawing strings went on Green Day’s recent back-to-basics album “¡Uno!”? Evidently the Bay Area punk band was saving them for “The Forgotten,” its new single from the soundtrack to “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2.”
Posted to Soundcloud on Tuesday, the song is a slow-moving power ballad in the vein of past Green Day hits such as “Wake Me Up When September Ends” and “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life),” with a tender vocal performance by Billie Joe Armstrong and heavy words about not looking away from the arms of a moment (whatever that means).
“The Forgotten” arrives soon after the band’s announcement that it’s canceled live dates through the end of 2012 and postponed shows previously scheduled for January and February. In September, Armstrong revealed that he was headed to rehab following an onstage meltdown at Clear Channel’s iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas, and perhaps his obligations there are why the new song’s music video -- which intercuts studio and concert footage with clips from “Breaking Dawn” -- feels so tossed-off. Watch it below.
Green Day’s “¡Dos!,” the second installment in a trilogy of albums, is due out on Nov. 9; “¡Tré!” follows on Dec. 11.
