Beyonce leads 2014 MTV Video Music Award nominations

Beyoncé leads all nominations for the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards with eight, the network unveiled Thursday morning. Nods were spread among numerous hits from the pop diva’s provocative, self-titled visual album, which she released without warning late last year.
Her seductive duet with husband Jay Z, “Drunk In Love,” is up for several awards, including the night’s top prize, video of the year, as well as the network’s collaboration field. Beyoncé also received multiple nominations for brazen sex jam “Partition” and empowerment anthem “Pretty Hurts.”
Also competing for video of the year: Pharrell William’s wonderfully zeitgeisty single “Happy,” Sia’s “Chandelier,” Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” and Iggy Azalea’s breakout smash “Fancy.”
Eminem and Azalea each scored seven nominations apiece. While the rising Australian rapper was shut out of the hip-hop race, Azalea is up for top pop and female honors.
Eminem’s “Berzerk” is nominated for hip-hop video, and “Monster,” his collaboration with Rihanna, is up for several awards, including male video and collaboration.
Sam Smith, 5 Seconds of Summer, Charli XCX, Schoolboy Q and Fifth Harmony are up for the MTV artist to watch award.
Nominees for a new fan-voted category, best lyric video, will be announced at a later date.
The 2014 VMAs will air live on Aug. 24 from the Forum in Inglewood. The ceremony will be the first awards show to broadcast from the Forum since it reopened earlier this year after a $100-million makeover by Madison Square Garden Co.
Usher, Ariana Grande and 5 Seconds of Summer have been announced for the telecast’s slate of performers, with additional talent yet to be named.
Online fan voting for the awards is now open.
