Neutral Milk Hotel sets Hollywood Bowl date for September
Fans who have spent the last 15 years waiting for Jeff Mangum to return to the stage have gotten an unexpected deluge of shows.
First came the reclusive Mangum’s first Coachella appearance (as a solo artist) last year. Then came the full return of his influential Neutral Milk Hotel project on the same stage in April of this year -- the group’s first full tour since 1998.
Now the outfit has booked its largest L.A. headlining date yet -- a night at the Hollywood Bowl.

Reps for the bowl have announced a Sept. 18 headlining date for the group, its only L.A. appearance for the year. Single tickets for the show go on sale May 4, while season subscriptions are currently available.
The band’s Coachella set was ramshackle but well received. The Times’ Randall Roberts described it as “a wonderfully loose set of songs from its influential two albums...The band at various times featured accordion, hard-strummed acoustic guitar, bowed banjo, singing saw, French horn, trumpet, toy saxophone and a general musical buoyancy... Above it all was Mangum’s exuberant voice, one able to roll across octaves while bellowing lines about two-headed boys ‘with pulleys and weights creating a radio played just for two.’ ”
